nova morada :: new address

::

This blog has a new home and a new purpose (as I mentioned a year ago). I hope you enjoy and continue to accompany me there.

Hope to see you there!

a natureza nossa vizinha :: our neighbour's nature

::

This is what we want for her. Not only at the weekend, or once in a while, but every day. Nature. Soil to get dirty, water to splash. With the sun warming her skin and the birds composing the soundtrack. Bugs arousing her curiosity and becoming habitual presence in her days. May she grow calling the trees and the animals by their names. Happy, of course, happy!

And although we are still in the village - and not in our little piece of land - there are cows grazing at the end of our street, the hill stretches beyond the backyards, all the streets will hit the field and we are five minutes away from one of the most beautiful places in the area (although the list of beautiful places in the region doesn't stop growing...).

2 meses :: 2 months

Monsanto
Monsanto
Monsanto
Monsanto

Ir a algum lado implica sempre longas conversas.

Bem vindo Setembro!

::

We've been here for two months.

We've already unpacked all the boxes, hanged all the frames that we brought and wanted to keep. We are testing the layout of the furniture in the new spaces and we already feel this house as our refuge.

We overcame (I overcame...) the summer, the days (very) hot and dry. I thought it would cost me more. After all it's the damp heat that I don't like.

We already know our village. Every day we walk the old paths that envelop it, unveiling new nooks and crannies. Every week we stroll through our county, discovering new villages, traveling on beautiful and (more than) secondary roads, familiarizing ourselves with the more or less hidden wonders shared by the "people from here".

We already recognize our neighbours: the neighbour next door who has a daughter-in-law also from Porto, the Englishman who loves to ride a bike and his dog, the gentleman who has an impeccable vegetable garden right in front of us. Everyone already knows us, even those we have never seen...

We're charmed by projects (and people) that fill us with hope for the future of the planet, like this and this. We still feel that we are surrounded by loving, calm people. Going somewhere always involves long conversations. The time here has another measure.

We've made friends, too, from afar, with beautiful projects like this. And we meet vibrant people, who build a different future, like these. And people full of wisdom and who continue with bright eyes and the will to change, like this couple. We already had some of our people come and visit us (and cherish us) and we were able to show them little bits of this region that has conquered us. We have already returned to Porto and we felt strange the confusion and the noise. And I couldn't fill myself with the ocean, which I still miss.

Now is time to start over. A new school year begins for Zé Manel. There is a project of a new school to sprout, in which we have the privilege of being involved. New works and projects are arising for me. This blog that I want to develop. There is much to learn about the soil, the seasons, the moons, and the sowings. A garden to grow. Trees for planting. There is a land to revitalize, to love and to raise our dream. And there is a little girl to blossom.

Welcome September!

sonho :: dream

::

At the moment, this is our dream (oh, and it's so nice to have dreams!). The place we found one year ago, in one of the most beautiful and intact regions of our country.

First we fell in love by the region: the wide horizons, the harmonious villages, the fresh air full ofintense aromas, the clear passage of the seasons, the silences and night skies, the birds' symphonies every morning. Then we found a little corner where we feel - from the first time - at home. The place where we want to live in (more) harmony with nature, at the rhythm of the earth; where we want to see children and trees growing; were we know that everything will be simpler, harder too, but - no doubt (for us) - the fullest.

At the moment we fill our hearts with some - more or less - short visits, during which we know different places and people, we learn the changes that occur with the passage of months, we realize better every inch of land we have at our care (and that will take care of us). And we're idealizing our project, which will transform our dream into reality.

::

I love to delight myself with the sights, though it's when I have the time to notice the little things that I feel I've known a bit of a place's soul.

sementes :: seeds

coentros a nascer

::

For me it's still fascinating to watch the seeds that I threw to the ground breaking the soil and born lush green plants.

More prosaically I'm glad to know that in a few weeks I already have coriander for my "açorda" (a traditional portuguese meal)...

ervas :: herbs

::

These days you can find me, in my free time, watching and photographing the herbs that spontaneously grow in the fields and paths...

I’ve always wanted to learn how to identify and use the so-called weeds, which are really fantastic and can be very useful (as food, "medicine", ...)

For now, my guide is an old book that I inherited, but I have to get one with more herbs and information.

viver no campo :: live in the countryside

::

One day I'll live in the countryside. I'll grow my vegetables, know the herbs that born on the edge of the pathways, be able to identify the mushrooms on the hills, live (even more) to the rhythm of the seasons. It's not yet that day: I'm happy where I am right now. But I'm also privileged because - whenever I want - I can spend time in a place that gets us closer to nature.

resiliência :: resilience

http://awondrousday.blogspot.com

::

This little strawberry plant was almost eaten by one of our cats. Endured a month of neglect (good that it rained ...). And now, almost at the end of summer, it celebrates its resilience with a small flower, a promise of fruit.

surpresa :: surprise

::

What a nice surprise was waiting for me on the balcony! Before leaving, I pulled out from this pot the last and spindly arugula stalks and left the soil to rest for the next sowing. I arrived and found new and vibrant sprouts.

o primeiro tomate :: first tomato

::

Probably only those who have a kitchen-garden - even if it's only a small balcony (like me) - realize the joy of seeing the first ripe tomato, shining flushed with proud.

semear... :: to seed

::

This is what happens when you (still) don't have a good hand for seeding...

And - maybe - because it was a great amount of seeds for this piece of soil...

Does anyone wants basil?

apanhando vegetais :: picking vegetables

::

It's a privilege to pick from the soil what we eat.
