balanço - outono :: taking stock - autumn

countryside life, simple living
countryside life, simple living
countryside life, simple living

Bom Outono!

A fazer sabão, sabão, sabão
A esperar a chegada do meu novo sobrinho
A adorar ver o nosso dome a tomar forma
A considerar novos desafios profissionais
A ver este programa sobre construção off the grid
A petiscar figos e amoras

Even though it seems - around here - that the autumn has not arrived yet, I know that summer is almost gone. And, as I "predicted", it was an amazing summer for us.

Our second summer, here.

If a year ago we were settling down, discovering the surrounding, and creating a brand new family dynamics, this year we already have a group of friends with whom we share leisure time (but not only). We already have our favorite places. We already started to give shape to our dream.

We already feel part of this land.

And me, the one who still prefers the cold days, I look forward to get out of my "reverse hibernation" (in the absence of an appropriate word...) and (re)start a variety of projects bubbling in my head.

Happy autumn!

Making soap, soap, soap
Cooking with loads of pumpkin
Drinking apple juice
(Re)Reading books of cosmetics and natural hygiene
Searching for recent pictures of me (this thing of being a photographer...)
Wanting to make some arrangements around here
Looking to my bare feet enjoying their last weeks of "freedom"
Deciding the name of our little piece of land (it was never baptized)
Wishing that this is the autumn that I'll become addicted to knitting
Enjoying to collect fruits from our trees
Waiting our new nephew's arrival
Liking to work with a new friend
Wondering a lot, awake. Dreaming not so much, during sleep (as far as I remember)
Loving to watch our dome gaining shape
Listening, delighted, my daughter's linguistic repertoire (with daily improvements)
Considering new professional challenges
Watching this TV show about building off the grid
Thinking how genetics can be something amazing - while I look to Iris with her father
Marveling with the Ash trees in our land
Needing that autumn arrives, for real
Smelling the macerated oils that I've been straining and storing
Wearing, beyond the limit (really?), my household t-shirts
Following this family
Noticing that one of the things I love most, living here, is to show the wonders of this land to those who visit us
Knowing our (any time soon) neighbours. Most of them  with more than 80 years old
Admiring, even more, this women that I've been following for years, though I've never met her personally
Organizing (collecting, cleaning and drying) seeds to our future vegetable garden
Preparing the planning I want to follow in the next few months
Buying woolen balls (beautiful and artisanal)
Bookmarking the same books from 3 months ago
Disliking to fail my yoga daily practice
Opening my daughter's closet and realizing that she only put on 5 garments (as you can check here). Gladly, it's all given or borrowed
Feeling very fortunate for the people entering into our life
Coveting this magazine
Snacking figs and blackberries

balanço - verão :: taking stock - summer

azores florest father and daughter

A beber muita, muita água
A usar roupa levezinha
A comprar ferramentas agrícolas
A cobiçar nada, nada, nada.
A petiscar granola

June was a busy month for us. As we were traveling, we hardly noticed the arrival of summer. But we left the house wearing a sweater and boots and when we got back there was enough heat (much more than enough) to walk barefoot, sleep under an open window and soak in the waters of the lake. I foresee a summer full of news, activities and other things...

Making a rag doll
Cooking as little as possible, because the heat has arrived
Drinking loads of water
Reading various books on medicinal plants
Searching for someone who knows how to build with by traditional techniques
Wanting to make some more changes in my diet
Looking at my baby girl, with a lot great deal of apprehension about the future (even an eternal optimist has such moments like this, right?)
Deciding the last details in the project of our house (at least the last of this initial phase...)
Wishing to "dispatch" the plague that is ravaging my succulents
Enjoying the company of an old friend that now is living near by
Waiting for the day when that we are going to make the first construction in our land (it’s we’re almost there!)
Liking what I'm doing to give to my babygirlbaby girl on her birthday
Wondering, and planning with other mothers, a new school
Loving the water temperature of "our" lake
Listening, with Íris, songs from my childhood (some very politicized: I was a child of the revolution...)
Considering painting my hair (it's so dark!), something I did only once, many years ago
Watching videos on youtube (what a world!) about self-construction
Thinking about vacations. Or rather, thinking about how – for many years now - I don’t feel the need of vacations. Not because I don’t love traveling (and learning about other cultures, other realities) but because I don’t need an escape from the life I havelead.
Marvelling (it’s a constant) with the evolution of this tiny human being that we have on our guard
Needing mosquito nets on all the windows
Questioning my sanity (and my craze of wanting to do many things at once)
Smelling the sun (on earth, on clothing, on skin)
Wearing light clothes
Following Nicola (and feeling like returning to Australia)
Noticing that here - on this land, at this moment - is the first time that I feel that I belong to a place. It’s the first time that, being absent, I miss a place (not just people or home)
Knowing more beautiful people who are moving here
Admiring the human being with whom I share this life
Organizing the photos I took during our last trip (and seeing if I start making physical albums again)
Preparing the visit of some family and friends
Buying farm tools
Bookmarking this book
Disliking (still) not being able to proper organize myself (and that craze of wanting to do many things at the same time that I spoke back there...)
Opening way through the spontaneous herbs of our land (and where I’ve already discovered - with the help of a knowledgeable person  - oats!)
Feeling a lot of strong grip on my heart (of those who which give us shivers and wrap our stomachs) with this news
Coveting nothing, nothing, nothing. And grateful for what I have and for whom I have
Snacking granola

balanço - primavera :: taking stock - spring

countryside life - home to be

Eu sei, eu sei.

Logo a seguir ao meu último post, o meu portátil começou a falhar-me.

A conhecer melhor a flora desta região
A sentir muita impotência perante tantos atentados à vida humana

I know I know. I was so excited to get back to this blog and then I disappear for three months...

Just after my last post, my laptop started to fail me. One by one, the keys stop responding: first the "s", then the "e", the "w", ... Try to write without those keys!!!

Search - and weigh - the hypotheses: buy a new computer or arrange the current one or...
Decide: buy a keyboard to attach to the laptop.
Retrieve the delay in the work (because I'm one of those people that even in autocad like to use written commands...).

And now, coming back here to catch up...

For now, I'll leave you the taking stock that I made in the beginning of this spring.

Making solid shampoo (let’s see if this is the right formula for my hair)
(trying to) Cooking  in clay pots
Drinking lucia lima tea
Reading Justine, the first of The Alexandria Quartet
Searching for inspiration to decorate very little houses
Wanting to import the idea of garage sales. We imported so much american stuff, this - at least - would be useful
Looking at the books on the shelves and realizing that choosing books to give away it's not as easy as I thought
Deciding to end my presence on (some) social networks (yes, this is a process...)
Wishing to be the chosen ones to leave at the house that we want to be our next (still wainting…)
Enjoying the group of parents (and their respective offspring) that's being gathering around here
Waiting that somehow events like this one show people that we have to change the way we live on this planet (which happens to be the only one we know that sustains our form of life...)
Liking more and more, to be with the friends that we made, thanks to my first blog.
Wondering and planning a garden
Loving to have started swimming again
Listening my daughter's musical "choices" (I let her choose the vinyl’s we play, my father's inheritance). I've been listening since Bach to 70s dance music
Considering a big roadtrip in the summer
Watching (and saving to share with Iris later on) short movies for children
Thinking about how to live here helps to work our patience (especially Zé Manel’s): everything takes a lot more time to be done
Marvelling at the view from our balcony
Needing new towels (until a few years ago, I had never even imagined that towels had expiration date...)
Questioning (so often I do it) the sanity of so many human beings
Smelling the shrubs of rosemary and lavender that surround our house
Wearing caps and scarves, because we live high up in the village
Following my friend Ana, who I love to read, and who has returned to the blogosphere
Noticing that being a mother gives me a lot of strength to be the best version of myself
Knowing better the flora of this region
Admiring the abundance of water in the landscape,
Organizing the materials that I have been saving for years and that will be useful for Iris
Preparing my photographic equipment. In the last months I (almost) have only photographed with my phone and I miss the camera
Buying succulent (I found a place with huge varieties. A ruin!)
Disliking that we still have too much plastic in the recycling bin
Opening (and tidying up) the last boxes (after all, we're not going to beat the record of the last house move, where we put everything in order in 2 months)
Feeling a lot of impotence in the face of so many attacks on human life
Coveting marvelous markers (but I don’t want to go back and start to buying markers again - the plastic, the plastic, my friends…)
Snacking vegetables chips

Here you can see the previous "taking stock".

balanço - inverno :: taking stock - winter

beira baixa

A decidir (finalmente) o rumo deste blogue
Quanto a mim, claro)
A cheirar a lenha a arder
A usar muitas camadas de roupa
A seguir a Anna
A organizar a próxima mudança de casa (seja ela qual for…)
A petiscar chocolate

Aqui podem ver os "balanços" anteriores.

Winter has begun a few days weeks ago... The funny thing is that the beginning of the rain and cold season (theoretically), it’s also the beginning of the bigger days. Although slowly, it's good to see that each afternoon lasts a little longer than the previous one. And we (still) have more time to go outside!

Around here for six months, and we haven't yet settled (whatever that means...). By the way, we're currently preparing to move again... We're getting experts in changes; I tell you!

We are still looking for our special place, and there are some changes and deviations to do in order to fulfil our dream. But we still feel that this is where we want to see our baby girl grow. Even if it costs - and costs - to be far from ours, especially when something goes wrong and we want to be there, even if it's only to give a big hug.

In addiction, somewhere in late 2017, the 1001 days of my "101 things in 1001 days" project ended. And it's so interesting to realize that, in this space of time, so much has changed! 3 years ago, I would never imagined that I would be what I am today...

Many things to share with you in the time ahead. And the most important thing for me is that I found the direction to this blog. I'm very excited! As much as when I started my first blog.

But for now, I leave here my taking stock of these days.

Making wooden block constructions
Cooking (with) parsnips
Drinking ginger tea
Reading an eBook for the first time (will I become a fan?)
Trawling for pine cones (the best lighter that exists)
Wanting to be more present around here (it will happen)
Looking at the magnificent skies that vast horizons provide me
Deciding (finally) the direction of this blog
Wishing that we will be the ones chosen for the house that we want to be our next
Enjoying the olive oil made with our olives, picked up by us (and by our family and friends)
Waiting that my hair realizes that autumn it’s gone...
Liking the "new" people around us
Wondering about a trip
Loving to have received many of our friends for the New Year's Eve
Listening to the Lion King’s soundtrack (in Portuguese). And no, it's not for her, it's really me…
Considering donating a large part of my library
Watching this program (the only one worthwhile, within the genre. In my opinion, of course)
Thinking about how we have reduced - with each new move - the time we stay in the houses we lived in...
Marvelling at the natural process of discovering the words, the speech
Needing a rain poncho baby wearing friendly
Questioning the size of the houses, nowadays (by comparison with the houses decades ago, for example)
Smelling wood burning
Wearing many layers of clothing
Following Anna
Noticing how fast our girl grows
Knowing the limits of our county, which - in a large area - are the same of our country (and thinking about the artificial borders)
Admiring the wild animals that live nearby (I've seen hares, foxes, deer, griffins, partridges, herons, crows, as well as dozens of other species of birds I still can’t identify)
Organizing the next house move (whatever it may be...)
Preparing to highly reduce our material possessions
Buying a weekly basket of organic and local vegetables (while we don’t have ours) thanks to a friend’s initiative
Bookmarking… no physical book (alas, alas, ...)
Disliking how cold this house is
Opening the cabinets for declutter (very trendy)
Feeling a great relief (and happiness) to know that the youngest baby in the family will be fine (after we've had a big fright)
Coveting nothing at all
Snacking chocolate

balanço - outono :: taking stock - autumn

proença-a-velha

O Outono é a minha estação.

A fazer o nosso pão
A considerar algumas mudanças no nosso projecto “campestre”
A usar T-shirts bem velhas
A seguir a Maria Cordeiro
A reparar nos pequenos sinais que anunciam a chegada do outono
A conhecer várias pedagogias menos convencionais
A organizar a despensa
A comprar lãs

Autumn is my season. And I'm excited about our first autumn here in the countryside, in closer contact with nature.

Summer has gone by at a glance, between unpacking and settling in this house, discovering our community, enjoying our baby... no longer being a baby.

Now, the cooler days invite us to spend more time outside and the surroundings are full of wonders to discover, I'm sure. I hope to share them with you!

Making our bread
Cooking all kind of preserves
Drinking homemade oat milk
Reading (and loving) children's books
Trawling for an old pantrycloset for my potions
Wanting to hit the right formula for my hand cream
Looking at our olives maturing beautifully
Deciding to (temporarily?) close my facebook account (I found facebook business, to manage the pages, thanks to Raquel)
Wishing I had learned to knit as a teenager (they wanted to teach me...)
Enjoying the coolest days
Waiting for the oncoming visit of my people who live on the other side of the ocean
Liking to see my little girl at ease with all the animals (cats, dogs, hens, geckos, ants, ...)
Wondering about our house (a constant in the last Taking stocks)
Loving the visits of some of our friends and show them some of the beauties of our new county

A ler estes ensaios
A adorar as nossas redondezas
A cheirar o ar puro
A usar roupa bem levezinha
A seguir a Joana Diogo
A organizar a casa

Last month was of transition. We changed home, and we even changed region! We switched from city to countryside. We left the morning fog, the ocean's view, the northeastern, the smell of the sea; and we've welcomed the intense sun, the olive-laden hills, the warm breeze, and the pure air scented with herbs. I'll miss (I already do) my family and friends, the sea next door; but every day I fall more and more in love with this place: when I walk the ancestral paths that leave the village, when I look at the night sky, when I see a stork gliding over the house, when I hear the crickets at dusk,... And each day, I'm pretty sure that it's in a place like this that I want our little girl to grow: bare feet on the ground, hair disheveled, knowing the names of the trees and animals.

And here I leave you the taking stock of this season, a month after its beginning. May your summer be full of adventures!

Making collages for my baby's bedroom
Cooking salads, if I may say so
Drinking icy lemon grass tea
Reading these essays
Trawling for someone to teach me about cultivating on this land, in this climate
Wanting a pool full of ice cubes
Looking at the stars that look wonderful from here
Deciding the arrangement of things in the rooms of this house
Wishing that soon we can start building our house
Enjoying the themed parties in the villages of the county
Waiting for our cats to recognize this house as their own, so we can let them go out
Liking the village we came to live in
Wondering about our garden
Loving our surroundings
Pondering about the power that the average citizen can have
Listening to the (almost complete) silence of the nights
Considering painting or not some furniture
Watching videos about eco construction
Thinking about the album I want to do, about Iris's first year
Marvelling with (more than) secondary roads that we discovered almost every day
Needing to organize my external drive
Questioning my ability to evaluate people
Smelling the pure air
Wearing very light clothes
Following Joana Diogo
Noticing all the fauna that surrounds us
Knowing that we're doing the best options, when I see our girl so happy and healthy
Admiring these people
Organizing the house
Getting the land ready for sowing
Buying in large quantities (the city is far from here)
Bookmarking books about herbs and medicinal herbs
Disliking the days of excessive heat (I already knew that this part would be hard for me)
Opening and closing the covers to control the temperature inside the house
Feeling very enthusiastic about this blog’s fresh start (let’s see how this will go…)
Coveting big, large trees
Snacking sloes, from the tree that exists in this house

A sonhar novos sonhos (eh, eh)
A adorar ser mãe
A reflectir sobre as distâncias
A ouvir Leonard Bernstein
A ver filmes antigos
A cheirar as noites à beira mar
A usar sempre as mesmas peças de roupa
A seguir a Brooke
A sentir-me simultaneamente melancólica e esfuziante
A petiscar amêndoas

One season has passed and I didn’t come here... And I miss it, seriously, but I'm still getting used to our new rhythms and I have so much to do (or should I say: I want to do so much...)!

But winter has been sweet for us. We now worry about things like viruses and we have learned words like bronchiolitis... But besides a stuffy nose (twice), all was well. We have a tough girl who already does trekking like a big person. And, of course, we are still very much in love...

Let´s see if it’s with the spring that I return to this blog.

Making several things at the same time
Cooking without salt for my baby
Drinking beet juice
Reading a friend's first book
Trawling for old furniture
Wanting to take an immersion bath, but my environmental conscience...
Looking at the moon, now that it has returned to my field of vision (thank you, Earth’s translational movement)
Deciding the menu for a party
Wishing that the sea water was warmer around here...
Enjoying the days growing
Waiting for the time shift to teach outdoors in the late afternoon
Liking to meet a very old and loving couple, in our daily walks
Wondering new dreams (eh, eh)
Loving being a mother
Pondering about distances
Listening Leonard Bernstein
Considering whether or not to use wool covers with my baby's diapers
Watching old movies
Thinking that I have to go and renew my citizen card (which expired in my daughter birth´s month)
Marvelling at a baby's rapid evolution
Needing to write more in the blog (it’s good for me)
Questioning our decisions, sometimes wavering
Smelling the nights by the sea
Wearing always the same clothes
Following Brooke
Noticing everything (and everyone) that we are going to leave
Knowing that life is made of change
Admiring Hengki Koentjoro’s images
Organizing my papers
Getting ready the next 3 months
Buying toys (few) in natural materials
Bookmarking travel guides
Disliking to no longer seeing the sunset from my balcony (alas, the translation movement...)
Opening our home to the sun
Feeling simultaneously melancholic and exhilarating
Coveting seeds (the kind that we spread on the soil...)
Snacking almonds

pictures from my instagram (I have photographed much more with my phone than with my camera...)

A cozinhar granola
A beber cevada
A ler livros para crianças
A querer voltar a praticar (yoga) regularmente
A decidir qual será a nossa próxima casa
A esperar, amiúde, a chegada do carteiro
A considerar pintar o cabelo
A cheirar o nosso pinheiro natural
A seguir a Victoria
Volto a ele muitas vezes!
A petiscar fruta desidratada
A ouvir Luísa Sobral

2016 was an extraordinary year for me (for us). If I'm fortunate enough to be able to count - in my life - many wonderfully fulfilled years, the last one was - with no doubt - unique...
After the arrival of this (for now ...) sweet little girl to our lives, nothing will be the same!
And I already know - if everything goes as we dreamed - that 2017 will be a year full of challenges, changes and projects. But to follow the growth of this human being that we have to our care will be the greatest adventure of all.

With a little delay, I leave you the winter "taking stock", that I filled out during December.

And I wish you a year well lived, full of laughs, fulfilled dreams, meaning hugs, and lots, lots of love! Happy new year!

Making plans for a new life project
Cooking granola
Drinking barley
Reading children´s books
Wanting to practice yoga again (regularly)
Looking forward for nothing, since I can only consider myself privileged
Playing a lot
Deciding which house will be our next home
Wishing that these 3 new cousins will have as many good memories of the times that they will spend together, as I have from the time I spent with my own cousins
Enjoying the fact that the man of the house (eh, eh) is on vacations
Waiting often for the postman
Liking to see our walls becoming alive with photos and illustrations
Wondering about a garden
Loving being all together (the thing about having a family with emigrants...)
Pondering on the incredible year we had
Considering painting my hair
Watching this documentary
Thinking about the new architecture project I have in hands
Marveling about old books that I’ve "inherited"
Needing a massage
Questioning myself about the future of so many children, all around this world
Smelling our natural pine tree
Wearing wide coats to wrap my baby when I carry her on the sling or backpack
Following Victoria
Noticing that soon my baby will start to eat
Knowing that even though the year’s change is a bureaucratic thing, I still appreciate new beginnings
Admiring those who give so much of themselves without expecting nothing in return
Sorting my day-to-day life with new routines
Buying online (what a world!) from wonderful craftsmen
Getting ready our little girl's bedroom
Bookmarking this novel, once again. I often go back to it! It's a winter classic for me.
Disliking the "usual" confusion of this time (and running away from it)
Opening Christmas presents (still)
Giggling with my baby
Feeling overwhelmed with love
Coveting a camera (I received it as a gift)
Snacking dehydrated fruit
Hearing Luísa Sobral
